Wines i’ll be tasting…

So as promised in my previous blog I’m sharing the list of wine I’ll be tasting and a small brief about those wine…

Four Seasons Shiraz 2008, India

four-seasonsIn Maharashtra, all wine trails lead to Nasik. Excellent climate, great soil and history of grape-growing all make Nasik a natural choice for any wine producer in India. It thus came as quite a surprise when United Breweries set up their maiden winery in Baramati, and their vineyards in the nearby Sahyadri Valley. But in Sahyadri they found the perfect terroir, and a climate which afforded cool nights,warmdays and less rainfall than Nasik. And in Abhay Kewadkar, they found India’s foremost winemaker.With decades of experience, first at Chateau Indage and then at the helm of Grover wines, Abhay Kewadkar became a natural choice. His exceptional winemaking skills have produced a Shiraz with a deep ruby core, a smoky nose of dark berry and spice, and a well-structured palate with gripping tannins and great acidity. This stellar first offering fromFour Seasons will embrace Indian food!

Errazuriz Carmenère 2007, Chile

The Judgement of Paris – organized by the Chairman of our Board of Wine Advisors errezurizSteven Spurrier – is famous for not only establishing the credibility of California’s wines, but for also acting as an impetus to California’s burgeoning wine industry, stimulating both demand and sales of its wines worldwide. Inspired by this event and its consequences, Chilean wine producer Eduardo Chadwick set out to do something similar for the Chilean Wine Industry. In what has now become known as the BerlinTasting of 2004, Chadwick invited 36 journalists (including Steven Spurrier) and wine buyers to Berlin to taste blind a selection of wines from Chile, France and Italy. Classics from France (including Chateau Lafite, Chateau Latour and Chateau Margaux) and Italy (including Tignanello, Sassicaia and Solaia)were pitted against some of Chadwick’s wines from the same vintages.

Chadwick’s wines remarkably came out on top, and Chile suddenly found itself prominently perched on the world wine map. Initially famous for its juicy Merlots and mouthwatering Cabernets, Chile really brought to the fore the Carmenère, which is thought have originated in Bordeaux, where at one point it was widely cultivated for blending. Owing to the fickle nature of its growth and its low yields, it was phased out after the Phylloxera attack that destroyed most of Europe’s vines in the late 1800s. The “lost grape of Bordeaux” was thought to have disappeared forever, until it was rediscovered in the valleys of Chile, where until 1994, it was mistaken for Merlot.

What better an offering than a Carmenère from Eduardo Chadwick’s own winery? Its deep red robe, black berry nose and mocha palate are destined to please. Utterly enjoyable by itself, or with a good steak.

Cavalieri Di Moasca Barbera D’Asti 2007, Italy

barberaBarbera is the second most widely planted grape in Italy after the Sangiovese. Traditionally, it was considered to be an ordinary grape variety that was either used to make “people’s wine” (wine for everyday drinking) or to improve the colour of wines made from other grapes, specifically those made from Nebbiolo. It was then given a new lease of life by the winemakers from the Piedmont region of Italy, who by severely pruning the vines to produce smaller yields, vastly improved the quality of Barbera. Piedmont, already renowned for its wine, food and highly sought-after white truffles, was now famous for the quality of its Barbera. Nowhere is it better than in the city of Asti. This Barbera D’Asti is naturally high in acidity and soft on tannins, and will pair extremely well with most Indian food.

Waterford Estate Pecan Stream Chenin Blanc 2007, South Africa

South Africans speak of Stellenbosch with twinkles in their eyes. Its Mediterranean pecanclimate with hot dry summers and mild wet winters are ideal for the production of perfect grapes. Considered to be the prettiest wine-growing region anywhere in the world, Stellenbosch is the spiritual home of winemaking in South Africa. The University of Stellenbosch is responsible for nurturing many of the country’s better winemakers, who (more often than not) join one of the many leading wineries that make Stellenbosch their home. As winemaker for several leading wineries over the past three decades, Kevin Arnold has called Stellenbosch home since 1979. In 1998, he decided to join the Ord brothers to set up the Waterford Estate, also in Stellenbosch. Today, Waterford Estate has one of the best Cellar Door experiences worldwide. It also produces some of South Africa’s most exceptional wines, all of which embody the philosophy of the Waterford Way, a philosophy that celebrates prosperity, life, food, wine and family! The Pecan Stream Chenin Blanc is no different, and reflects hues of melon and peach on both nose and palate, making it utterly delicious with seafood. Bound to please every fan of India’s favorite grape type!

J LangaCavaBrutNV, Spain

langaIn the 1860s, after a particularly inspiring tour of the Champagne region of France, Spanish winemaker José Raventós decided to give Spain its own sparkling wine. He imported equipment from Champagne, and in 1872, used local grapes to produce Spain’s first methode champenoise sparkling wine. It was initially called champán, but later became Cava, to reflect the Spanish term for “Cellar” or “Cave”. Local producers took to it immediately and soon every still white wine in and around the Penedès region of Spainwas used to make Cava. Cava’s popularity spread rapidly; it is now used for any occasion, from weekend picnics to family traditions. Spanish babies get their first taste of Cava at their baptisms, where their pacifiers are dipped in it! Cava is today the world’s most popular sparkling wine.

Typically Cava can be made from a handful of grape varieties including the homegrown Macabeo, Xarel-lo and Parellada and the champagne-producing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The J Langa Cava is 70% Macabeo and 30% Chardonnay, reacquainting it to most champagne drinkers. This bright young wine will charm you with its citrus and shortbread aromas and slightly sweet yet crisp finish. It is most

enjoyable by itself, but can also be paired with delicately flavoured food.

TriventoTribuTorrontés 2008, Argentina

From almost the very moment that this wine was delivered to our offices, we knew that trivento-torrenteswe’d stumbled on to something special. However, nothing prepared us for the manner in which the aromas of this wine’s bouquet struck us squarely in the face! Aromas of grapefruit and peach leapt from our glasses. Even though Torrontés – a white wine varietal almost exclusive to Argentina – is known for its aromatic whites, we weren’t expecting such an incredible nose. With floral notes and the slightest hint of aniseed on the palate, this wine received unanimous approval from our entire tasting panel. Enjoy by itself as an aperitif, or with spicy food or smoked meats.

In spite of all this as a Citibank Platinum Cardholder, I’ll receive a FREE bottle of Bouvet-Ladubay Brut and here is the description of this fluid… Ok now comes my generosity part :)… I’d like to share this with my friends, twitter mates, my blog readers and acquaintance… This might happen in Chennai or Bangalore based on the response… Please comment your interest for participation and place based on that we might fix up the city and place… Now let me wait for the day I’ll be getting those bottles…

Bouvet-Ladubay Brut NV, France

 image005The Bouvet Ladubay Brut NV (non-vintage) is a sparkling wine from the Loire Valley in France. It has wonderful fruit aromas, and delicious flavours of spring flowers. It is a well-balance sparkling wine with a refreshing finish.

 Grape Variety: 90% Chenin Blanc, 10% Chardonnay

Tasting Notes: Bright yellow in colour with green highlights and fine, persistent bubbles. It has a dominant fruity nose with milder aromas of flowers.  On the palate, it leaves a subtle floral taste. The finish is brisk yet refreshing.

My earnings – a review

I was wondering how much I earned in this 9 years of professional life and how much I saved/invested… I was shocked to see that my finances are in negative and it is high time that I do something soon to recover…

Let us imagine I earned Rs.35,000/- on an average (averaging entry level salary to what I’m earning today) and 8 years and 6 months of professional experience which comes to 102 months… So, my total earnings till date is Rs.35,70,000/-…

IPL 2009 To-do

IPL starts from 18th and more importantly it starts with Chennai Super Kings & Mumbai Indians… Last year I didn’t show much interest in the beginning but over days the tournament pulled me and also had opportunities to watch matches because of my friend Prasad’s influence with India Cements… This time I miss the tournament in India coz I can’t watch matches from the Stadium… Anyways let me do put a to-do list and make my schedule such that it doesn’t affect my work and watching matches…

  • Download Matches Schedule and Place it in Desktop & stick a printout of schedule in my table…
  • Subscribe for Sony Max in Sun Direct DTH… This is first priority and this must be done tomorrow itself…
  • Buy Chennai Super Kings T-shirt from Reebok…
  • Block Rs.10,000/- for betting with friends particularly with my twitter mate Sameer…
  • Change my caller tunes to Chennai Super Kings song…
  • If possible perform a special puja for Chennai Super Kings to win the cup this time…
  • Form a group in Madurai to watch matches… In Chennai there is no need as there are lots of group which I must choose and join…

Also last time we went with my MBA group for matches… This time there is a get-together on April 27, 2009 before the graduation day… So, I might not miss my MBA group this time…

Moments of embarrassment

Yesterday I met an acquaintance who happens to be common friend of couple of my friends… He has learned about lot of my bad side of mine thru my friends and he was talking to me telling that his friends had a Crazy bad guy as a friend and when I told him I’m that crazy bad guy, I got embarrassed and I was enjoying his facial reactions :)… Then I thought I can think of embarrassment I’d over come till date…

  1. Got caught with a COP while I was coming in one way… Didn’t want to waste time and I immediately offered him a bribe and only then came to know he was a honest cop and ended up getting advice for 30 min…
  2. Got caught with my MOM when I was stealing money from her wallet…
  3. When I was mimicking a faculty while he was standing behind me… The way he handled the situation embarrassed me further…
  4. Myself and Aravind went to a expensive restaurant and had milkshake and we got a bill of $2 or something, but we had only $1… Aravind faced the situation but still that was an embarrassing moment…
  5. When I lied a client telling I was not feeling well and didn’t come online… He said he was following me on twitter and he knew what all I updated… I’m happy that people are following me and also embarrassed…
  6. As a child I use to quarrel with my sister for window seat and she will give it up for me…

There are more moments and these are the ones I remember immediately… If you have any moment of embarrassment please post it as comment… So, the we can know how we got embarrassed and see how we can overcome these situation in future…

Twitter & me

700-followers

Last week i crossed 4000 tweets and got 700 followers in twitter.com… It is indeed a milestone as I’m a late entrant to twitter and just started being an active participant for less than 6 months, thanks to Sanj… From then on twitter has become an integral part of my lifestyle and I’ve immensely benefited because of twitter… These are the list of things I gained because of twitter;

  • Gained many project from twitter
  • Got many leads and references from twitter
  • My brand penetration, Eg: I got an Direct Message yesterday
    shrirambrDo you work in Cogzidel? Read your CFOs article in last months businessgyan. Pretty good.
  • Networking and lots of friends. I cant imagine if I could have gained this many friends physically… Out of 700 followers I’m in close touch with atleast 50+ folks…
  • I need not update about what I’m doing to 100’s people… One tweet reaches 700 of my friends telling what i’m doing…
  • I did couch surfing with some of twitter friends
  • If I need any help I just posted it in Twitter and I got the solutions most of the time
  • I get to know what is happening at a fast interval… Many times before it comes in TV or news paper… Eg: 26/11 Mumbai shootout came in Twitter first than it reached NDTV or other media…

I hope I experiment twitter more and I can let you know itz benefits in coming days… Please keep reading my blog regularly…

The real Slumdogs

Last Sunday I was in Bangalore… I reached Bangalore very early in the morning say by 5 AM and reached home by 5:15 AM… When I opened the gate I was chased out by a mother Slumdog which wanted to protect itz puppies from me…

I got scared and didn’t enter the gate… Since it was dark I was unable to see both mother & itz puppies as they were black in color…

I was still standing in the road thinking the tenants would wakeup soon and help me to get in… The wait lasted for 15 min and there was no progress then I made a bold move to enter the house and I successfully entered the house without any damage :)…

After entering the house I had to laugh at myself because I was denied an entry into my own house by a Slumdog… I just remembered a famous Tamil saying “Anda Vandha Pidariya Oor Pidari Thorathuna Kadai” (Story of a Guest Devil driving away the Native devil)…

Then I took a nap and then started to BOCC and I didn’t want to take a chance again and thought I must befriend the mother and the puppy… So I fed them with a pack of Good Day biscuits and befriended them… When I returned in the evening mother Slumdog didn’t make any noise and let me freely into my house :)…

Here are the snaps of the true Slumdogs…

I’m a Word Press Boy

I’m a WordPress Bhoy boy looking for a WordPress girl 🙂 yes for last 2 days I’m using WordPress… Not it is not a fools day prank… You can check this blog is on WordPress… I’ve been using Drupal CMS for my blog for last 4 years and I’ve great love for Drupal… There were lot criticism and cry from Drupal world… Even I got a shout from a buddy in twitter…

tronathan@anandnataraj Why on earth would you go from drupal TO wordpress? please enlighten me…6:19 AM Mar 29th from TweetDeck in reply to anandnataraj

For Drupal lovers or WordPress lovers let me confess I’m still a Drupalian by heart and WordPress is just a mask… I still challenge everyone that Drupal is the best CMS in the world than any other CMS… So, you can ask me why I converted from Drupal to WordPress… Here are my justifications

  •
    • WordPress is quick in giving updates and more happening now-a-days
    • WordPress has all the tools for running a blog, which drupal must improve
    • WordPress admin interface is very simple to use
    • WordPress has more plugins and themes compared to drupal
    • Last but not least I get lot of enquries on wordpress customization… So using the system will help me understand client’s challenges and expectation…

I decided to convert to WordPress a month back, but I researched a lot on reading other blogs on lessons as I didn’t want to take a change… But itz all done within an hour and the process was very simple… This is what I did;

1.)    Installed WordPress in a folder /blog…

2.)    Make sure both wordpress and drupal tables are in same database…

Please use below SQL queries to export the posts and comments from drupal to wordpress 2.7.1. I used phpmyadmin to write queries

This sql will export all posts from drupal to wordpress 2.7.1

# Use the Drupal database

use db261070012;

# Remove all current posts from WordPress

TRUNCATE TABLE wp_posts;

# Insert posts from Drupal into WordPress

INSERT INTO wp_posts (id, post_date, post_content, post_title, post_excerpt, post_name, post_modified, post_type, `post_status`)

SELECT DISTINCT

n.nid `id`,

FROM_UNIXTIME(n.created) `post_date`,

r.body `post_content`,

n.title `post_title`,

r.teaser `post_excerpt`,

IF(SUBSTR(a.dst, 11, 1) = ‘/’, SUBSTR(a.dst, 12), a.dst) `post_name`,

FROM_UNIXTIME(n.changed) `post_modified`,

‘post’ `post_type`,

IF(n.status = 1, ‘publish’, ‘private’) `post_status`

FROM cms_node n

INNER JOIN cms_node_revisions r

USING(vid)

LEFT OUTER JOIN cms_url_alias a

ON a.src = CONCAT(‘node/’, n.nid)

;

            This sql will export all comments from drupal to wordpress 2.7.1

TRUNCATE TABLE wp_comments;INSERT INTO wp_comments (comment_post_ID, comment_date, comment_date_gmt, comment_content, comment_parent, comment_author, comment_author_email, comment_author_url, comment_author_ip, comment_approved)SELECTnid,FROM_UNIXTIME(timestamp),FROM_UNIXTIME(timestamp),comment,0,name,IF(mail=”, CONCAT(REPLACE(LOWER(name),’ ‘, ”), ‘@’, hostname, ‘.localhost’), mail),homepage,hostname,1FROM cms_comments;

This sql will update the number of counts in wordpress posts table

# update comments count on wp_posts tableUPDATE wp_posts SET comment_count = (SELECT COUNT(comment_post_id) FROM wp_comments WHERE wp_posts.id = wp_comments.comment_post_id);

3.)    In Drupal, I used url alies which was like /my_post_title_name and I wanted to have the same url alies.
To do this I updated the WordPress Permalink settings:
Custom Structure : %postname%

4.)    120 posts and 98 comments were successfully imported from drupal to wordpress…

5.)    Finally pointed my site’s destination from /anandnataraj (location where drupal files reside) to /anandnataraj/blog (wordpress files)…

6.)    Changed rewritebase in /anandnataraj/blog/.htaccess from “/blog” to “/”…

7.)    Changed the site URL and blog URL in wp_options table to http://www.anandnataraj.com

It took 30 minutes to migrate from drupal to wordpress 2.7.1… So far, everything seems to be working just fine…

Yesterday I designed my own WordPress, brought a coffee mug and printed it there, also shot some snaps with it :)…
