Personal Branding Seminar in Chennai

There is a Personal Branding seminar by Brand YOU Professionals, Chennai.

Personal Branding is a topic, fast increasing in popularity and usage all over the world, even 10 years after Tom Peters first wrote his now famous article ‘A Brand called YOU’. At Brand YOU Professionals, it is our endeavor to acquaint YOU with the knowledge on this subject and through more interactive sessions, give you the Power of this tool.

Personal Branding is a very fascinating subject and when leveraged properly, it can benefit anybody – students, professionals, entrepreneurs, small businessmen. The benefits are both tactical in nature (excel in a job interview, stand out vis-a-vis your colleagues in your company) to strategic in nature (discover your inherent strengths, skill sets, passions; find out the purpose of your Life!).

The subject is vast, but what matters is that even a minor exposure to it can benefit YOU immensely. I invite YOU to make the most of this opportunity by learning more about this Group, this field and most importantly how it can benefit YOU.

Do check out our dedicated page on http://www.meetup.com/Brand-You-Professionals-Chennai/ . We are also having an exciting Workshop called the Brand YOU Workshop in end April 2009. A FREE Introduction to this Workshop is being given through a 1 hour session on 11th April 2009. I strongly urge YOU to participate in this session, not only to understand more about the structure and benefits of this unique Workshop but also to connect with fellow Brand YOU professionals should YOU join the Group through Meetup.com.

YOU are most welcome to call myself on +91.98840 56988 or email me at writetomilind@gmail.com to know more about any of the above or how it can help YOU.

What is this crap that too from a site run by Google… I’ve an Orkut.com account for last three years… Just logged into my Google adwords account which is a different from my orkut account… Now when I go to orkut it asks me to create a new account with my Google adword details… Also there is no link to tell that I already have an account or to clear the session… Please look at this screenshot and let me know if I missed out anything;

orkut
Google is known for itz simplicity and usability and this really disappoints…

Bangalore Open Coffee Club on 29 Mar 2009

Reached Zeo Coffee Shop by 10.10 AM (late by 10 min) by the time I entered the event has started… Not sure if there was a welcome note and self intro session…

The time I entered Mr.K.Ganapathy Subramanian guest speaker and a VC was already addressing the gathering… He shared many points and these are some of my take aways

 1. Explained about LP (Limited Partnership) & GP (General Partnership)
 2. How to approach a VC…
 3. How Due Diligence delays a funding process (This session had a debate)
 4. How VC’s calculate their ROI

Then after the session was over Vaidhy (Founder of Chennai OCC, which was the first OCC in India) was asked to give a small pep talk and then it was networking time and I networked with some people… Unlike Chennai OCC (Which I still believe is better)… Bangalore OCC is organized and I must give full credits to Kakoli Das for her moderation skills, she brought back things back to the point when ever the topic was diverted…

Before wrapping I want to give a brief on take away points in details because it enlightens me;

How to approach a VC: KGS recommends to get linked with companies which were funded by VC to get linked with those VC… The reasons given by him made sense

 1. VC’s get lots of enquires and changes of our proposal getting lost or delayed in the stack is more, so if we move thru a known source chances of getting a quick review is high…
 2. Person who had got a VC funding would have his own learning’s which will help us to avoid reinventing the wheel again…

How VC’s calculate their ROI: He said VC’s distribute their risk by investing 10% of the capital to companies which effectively means they will be investing with at least 10 companies… Let us assume for an example a VC firm has following;

Capital: Rs.100

Expected ROI: 20% of capital

No. of investment: 10 companies @ Rs.10 per company

Now here is the assumption or thumb rule

 1. 5 companies become bankrupt.
 2. 3 companies are average @ 5% each.
 3. Then how much the other 2 companies must perform to reach the yearly target of making 20% of the capital…

Formulae =

(Total Investment X 20% ROI) – (Investment A X 5%) – (Investment B X 5%) – (Investment C X 5%) = ROI expected on other 2 companies

These were some snaps which I took when the event was happening…

Interview with Mr.Vivekananthan, Founder Pertly

I’m honored to be with Mr.Vivekananthan, Founder Pertly… Vivek’s entrepreneurial journey starts from his student days and let us gets from him…

Q. Good Day Vivek. Can you tell us about yourself?

A. Hi Anand, Thanks for getting me into this interview. I am Computer science graduate dreamt about starting a company to improve the everyday lives of people. Founder of Pertly. Throughout this interview you would find how my dreams became actionable.

Q. When & how did your entrepreneur desire started & evolved?

A.  During my second year of college I took up a challenge of taking a project which my seniors left it off saying they cannot do. I challenged them and started it off, added to the fact that I don’t know any programming language at that time. I geared up in preparing for that project. I hardly got a week’s time to deliver. I started reading good books and slowly 4 individuals highly talented voluntarily joined with me saying they would help me out to complete this project.
We put our best efforts and we completed the project on time and delivered on the said exhibited time. Our team got praised everywere and eventually we won the first prize for best project exhibited.

This is the first event that acknowledged my skills. That is the proud moment I started finding opportunities everywere. I decided to take the road less travelled [during our college days]. I haven’t prepared for any campus interview, even my favorite teachers scolded me for being a bad example for my juniors. I never give up, I focused my energy in forming a team and again a golden opportunity knocked at me, this time it’s pretty big, our college is being selected for an open source project named “Tamil Database” its been funded by Tamilnadu government. I took up that project for two reasons, a. I don’t have capital to ignite a company b. I don’t like to ask it from my parents, becoz its my dream and I don’t want to risk my parent’s hard earned money. I see this as a golden opportunity.

With many helping hands from IIT, especially from Dr. Hema moorthy [Prof. Computer science department] we were able to complete that huge project.
Once after completing my degree I still had very less money to start a company so went for interviews and almost through to Accenture, but that is the best moment as one of my senior called me up [with whom I decided to start a company during college days]  asked me to join hands with him to co-found a company in Chennai. My parents believed on me and I came to Chennai to start my entrepreneur carreer. My first company is Universal Elements. We developed a travel product and it got very high profile clients in Chennai. We have grown a considerable way and we developed from 2 t o12. After a year or so myself and my co-founder got a difference in attitude. It was him who called me up to start a company, hence I left my company with empty hands and cheerful memories. I gave all my clients to them, but they refused to take up one single client whom they cannot manage, so I took them up resided in friends place and did projects for them to feed myself. This is how Pertly evolved.

Q. What are you hobbies other than your business?

A. It includes playing chess, reading books, watching films, spending some time with friends.

Q. Tell us how Pertly took shape?

A. After being a one man, I started with typical office cum residence, then slowly we have moved to a separate office of ours. This is how Pertly took shape.

Q. Tell us about your previous ventures?

A. We started to sell our services and products. We learnt that products is the only way were you can bring harmony to the lives of people. Our product did it for travel industry.

Q. Tell the challenges you faced (Pre formation & post formation)?

A. The biggest challenge is forming a team and finding the right balance between demand and the resources to fulfill the demand.
As for registering a company we did outsourced it to Mr. Bala (Cogzidel), they did a great job and I found no problems in forming a company.
As far as post formation is considered, its all about creating talent pool.

Q. Tell us about Pertly’s business model?

A. Our initial motto is “Do one and do it better”, It doesn’t mean that we would stick to only one in our lifespan, it means we would be in only one until certain process is evolved above the threshold. Once our base is strong we can build how many ever floors we want on the top of it.
We have started our focus on products, we are prototyping ideas, I suggest wait for few months to know more about that.

Q. Tell us about Pertly’s services & products?

A.
We are currently a service oriented company.
We design and develop applications pertaining to web. Our service offerings includes:

 • Graphic design
 • Websites – PSD to XHTML/CSS compliant websites
 • Content management – WordPress, Plugin development
 • Ecommerce
 • Payment gateways
 • Webapplication

Q. Do you feel the impact of recession? How do you plan to overcome this recession?

A. We are growing actually. Yes payments are getting delayed but other than that we don’t feel the heat. We are indeed expanding our team and starting growing ever faster.

Q. What are your future plans?

A. We are in the starting phase of our product designs and all I can say is only that, I can say more about that once official announcements are released.

Q. What is your advice for new startups and wannabe entrepreneurs?

A. “All things are created twice, once in your mind & once in the real world”, so create your idea in your mind and start evolving it faster and faster.

 • Register your company as soon as possible.
 • Get networked with fellow entrepreneurs

I hope you all enjoyed this interview let me know your thoughts on to it.

>End of interview<
Thank you very much Vivek for sparing your valuable time with us and it was really inspiring to be with you. We wish you all the very best… To know more about Pertly kindly visit http://www.pertly.co.in

Munnar trip: Part 1

Blogging about my Munnar trip is a long pending task… It all started with a call from Vijay Krishna asking me to join them for a trip to Punnagai Mannan falls (falls was named after Kamal Hasan’s movie Punnagai Mannan) near Coimbatore… I told them that I can join them only on Sunday as Saturday is a working day for me… Then I started my ay is office as usual and I got a call from Vijay telling plans got changed to Munnar… I was little upset because I was not mentally prepared for some other place and I was eager to visit a place which I just watched in a movie…

I packed my bags to Munnar by 3:30 PM and went to Bus Stand to board Munnar Bus… On reaching the bus terminus I was told direct bus to Munnar is scheduled only in the mornings and I was asked to goto Theni and then catch a bus to Munnar from there… Then I boarded a bus to theni & within 30 min drive from Madurai tyre got burst… Bus was jam packed and many people started boarding other buses… But I stayed in the bus and thought I can see what happens… Then suddenly driver said there is a spare tyre(stepney) and he changed the type and dropped in Theni within 2 hours… I reached Theni around 8 o clock and I was told next bus to Munnar is at 10 o clock…

I though I can have my dinner in a local hotel to get a feel of the place and in the hotel I engaged a conversation with two boys who were sharing my table… They became good friends and till now we keep calling each other :)… They told me about unexplored places in Theni and about local culture, they were very curious to know if I know any tamil actors and their houses… For them Chennai looks like heaven and it seems they have never been there… I’m really excited by the way they helped me…

Then I boarded the Munnar bus and I asked the conductor about journey time to munnar… People found from my lingo that I’m from Chennai… One particular gentleman started telling names of each and every place enroute to Munnar… I’ve never had such a journey; it was a great experience…

I was told there will be lot of elephant crossing in the nights and if any elephant sleeps/stands in the road vehicles has to shut the head light n engine and wait till the animal moves… Unfortunately that didn’t happen in our journey and I missed that experience… But on the way we saw an elephant and it roared, but I didn’t have time to pick my camera and take a snap…

Then I slept for sometime and all of a sudden bus stopped because of traffic jam…I went out for a leak and assumed traffic jam was because of elephants crossing… Then I walked further to see if there is any elephant…

One enquiring the status from a cab driver I came to know traffic jam was because of some quarrel between a tourist van and a truck driver… It took 30 min for the quarrel to get over and for traffic to get cleared… Then atlast I reached munnar by 2 o clock in the morning… It was shivering cold in the night…
Straight away went to the hotel and the doors were locked… I was preying for folks to pick the call… They didn’t pick my call making me scared and for a moment I thought I must sleep in the streets shivering the whole night… Then got a call from Vasanth and he opened the doors… Vasanth, Vijay & Sathish came from Coimbatore… All of us were tired because of the travel and we all crashed to immediately….

Then next day we all started for site seeing by 8.30 in the morning…

To be continued………
Part 2 coming soon……

Wikipedia & I

Yesterday I was hacking thru Wikipedia to post an article about RBS… What was thought to be challenging and confusing for last couple of years ended up very interesting and I learned the nuances of the system and wiki markup in 4 hours and  created an article for RBS (Don’t know if it will be there anymore as editors have recommended to delete it citing itz a new software)…

I started playing with Wikipedia by 10 PM yesterday and ended by around 2.30 AM today morning… Went home happily and had a nice sleep… Came to office in the morning and checked the article and was taken back seeing the recommendation to delete the article…

img-deletedmsg

You can see a box with red vertical line, which says “It is proposed that this article be deleted”

If you are a Wikipedian or if know any Wikipedian please let me know how to save my hard work… Anyways I’m not giving it up easily I’ve replied to the editors as well as I’m digging into Wikipedia help to know more about their systems and rules…

Ok now I want to explain my key learning’s and how I fell for Wikipedia… After deciding to post an article in Wikipedia I started searching for “Create Article” link & was try “Upload File” under tools to upload my logo… I read lot of wikis and their Help and after enough struggle I found out that a person has to become an Autoconfirmed user to upload things else we have to apply by filling a request form which will be reviewed by editors and based on their judgment things will be approved or rejected… To become a Autoconfirmed user we must have edited/contributed atleast 10 articles…

I started editing articles and this is when I fell in love with Wikipedia and decided I must become a Wikipedian… Initially I added Cogzidel under companies in Madurai, Adambakkam, economy of Chennai, then I went to my area Porur to share information I know and finally I made some edit for my college GLIM

By this time I finished editing 10 articles and became an Autoconfirmed user automatically and posted my article for RBS(also my first article)…

Before concluding let me share some of my pleasing moments…

This is my first Wiki markup code;

{{Infobox_Company
| company_name = RBS
| company_logo =
| company_type = Private
| owner = Cogzidel Technologies
| foundation = Chennai, Tamil Nadu<br> 2009

| location_country = India

| num_employees = 30 (2009)
| slogan = ‘Real bid real success’

And these are my contribution to Wikipedia till now…

RBS – Cogzidel’s first product launched

RBS – Cogzidel’s first product was launched on late hours of 25th March, 2009 at 23.45 IST… It is a proud and exciting moment for the entire Cogzidel team… I take this opportunity to thank Mr.Senthil Guru who started the project and Mr.Sathick Basha who took over from Senthil and completed the mission… I must also thank Mr.Pandi who assisted Sathick, Mr.Saravanan for CSS work, Mr.Major Karthik for his design, Mr.Bala Subramaniyam for managing and getting the product out successfully, last but not least it is our Bala Krishnan for his commitment and passion he contributed a lot encouraging the team and he acted as System Analyst for the project…

I’ll write a detailed blog about the product tomorrow… For now let me keep it brief; RBS is abbreviation for Reverse Bidding System, it is a bidding system which is developed by taking inspiration from Scriptlance.com… We have more features in mind to make the product unique and we will be evolving the product in a phased manner by releasing update at frequent intervals which will be bundled with new features and patches…

Product is launched under Creative Common license and is offered for free… This must be a bonanza for webmasters… We are offering the project for free to create more entrepreneurs & webmasters… You can think why we are offering it for free, let me explain it with an example,

“A has one rupee and B has one rupee… Both exchange that rupee… They go home with one rupee each!
But if A has one idea and B has one idea… Both exchange that idea… They go home with two ideas.”

Same way when we offer something for free lots of people will try it and it will create an eco-system where it will create lots of opportunity for many people and ideas will be flowing… So, we want to create such a eco-system and that is why we are offering the product for free…

In coming days I think there will be lots of success stories and I wish it happens soon……

Major Karthik honored us by launching the product… Here is the launch picture…

It is now official

Yes. It is official that the person whom we doubted is the real hacker… Also hacking was done using some holes in Scriptlance… Ok now let me explain the post events that happened after our previous blog post…

We go an email from the hacker and bala invited him for a chat in Yahoo!… The hacker acknowledged and they started negotiating terms… Parallely we were also working with Scriptlance guys… Yesterday bala proved me a point that every time we can’t mean business… Bala convinced the hacker claiming his act has cost him his job and some how got hold of the account… The hacker seems to be of good heart :), by now I think bala and hacker must have become good pals…

In the mean time Scriptlance was prompt in suspending the account and they started the act after we our self recovered the account from the hacker… But now we have to release the account from suspension… Scriptlance had some IVR system to confirm the phone number, they asked for last three transactions and the bank account used to withdraw the funds from Scriptlance… Also they asked an ID proof… At last we got our account released from suspension…

What worried me was Scriptlance didn’t give us any reason & assurance that this will never occur again… Also they deleted our post in their forum where we posted that our account was hacked and asked if there were any other person who has lost his/her account, which means Scriptlance forum is not transparent…

What ever the case many be we got the account back and the funds in the account is also safe… Today I’m having a meeting with bala to see how we can cope with marketing without Scriptlance…
