838 Kilometres, Two Drivers and a Day That Began at 4 AM

What a day!

It began at 4 in the morning. Ironically, when I know that I must wake up very early, I become so conscious about it that I hardly sleep. That night was no different. I kept checking the time, waiting for the alarm, and eventually began the journey without having slept.

Our first destination was Thrissur. We had to drop my friend’s wife at her office before turning back towards Chennai. By the time we reached Thrissur, a large part of the morning had already passed—but the longest part of the journey was still ahead of us.

Thrissur to Chennai.

Looking at that distance on the map can make anyone feel tired even before starting. But once we were on the road, we stopped thinking about the entire distance. We simply handled it one stretch at a time.

There were two of us to drive. When one person began to feel tired, the other took over. The person resting would take a short power nap and return refreshed enough for the next stretch. We did not treat the journey as one continuous race. Fuel refills, tea, snacks and proper food breaks naturally divided it into smaller and more manageable parts.

A bakery stop in the morning. Lunch along the highway. Another vegetarian food break in the afternoon. A few minutes outside the car, some conversation, and then back on the road.

Kilometres kept disappearing behind us.

The surprising part was that we did not feel the full tiredness while driving. Perhaps it was because we kept changing drivers. Perhaps it was the power naps, the breaks, the food or the constantly changing scenery. More than anything, I think the mind remained active because there was always a smaller target ahead—the next town, the next stop or the next driver change.

By the time we reached Chennai, the timeline showed 838 kilometres and nearly 14 hours on the road. We had started at 4:02 AM and arrived at 7:18 PM.

Only after reaching the destination did the scale of the day begin to sink in.

This was my first crazy long-distance drive after six years. It reminded me that some journeys appear exhausting when viewed as one enormous distance. But when shared between two people—and divided by rest, food, conversation and smaller milestones—the same journey becomes an experience.

The tiredness eventually catches up with the body. But the road leaves the mind with a story.

And this was certainly a day worth recording.

Anamalai to Chennai Drive

Got up early in the morning and started driving from Anamalai to Chennai… Once started my drive it was full of calls just reached A2B near Perendurai Bypass!!

Until now it was call all the way;

  • Got a call from Rooban and it was a general catchup call!!!
  • Get got a call from Vadamalayan Hospital that our HR met with accident.
  • Coordinated my IamCJ co-founder Dinesh to attend her in hospital.
  • Upon reaching the hospital Dinesh called and said HR has fractured her leg…
  • Then spoke to our Ravi Sir about the ESI mediclaim process and that was facilitated by him..
  • Had a SOD call with Swami and things were planned for the day…
  • Then it was a call with Bala about the franchisee agreement..

The advantage of having Bluetooth speaker really helps in improving the productivity on the drive…

Now it is continue the drive and work on follow up calls…

Also please pray for the quick recovery of our HR…

PS: Let us not open the debate of talking on the drive!! I believe talking over a hands free device is not a crime, but open to interpratations!!! Following article talks about the perceptions and let me open up a blog post separately for this debate!!!

Cashless Heart-full

My friend requested me to drive him for shopping… Being the end of the month I didn’t have a single dime; but i didn’t want to disappoint my friend & I swiped the last credit limit on my card to fuel the car… After our shopping my friend wanted to go for a drive… We normally drive to 24 hrs Cafe Coffee Day in SriPerambudur & since we didn’t have money we decided to take the Tirupathi road instead of Bangalore Highway owing to heavy traffic out there… I really enjoyed the drive as there was litrally no traffic & being cashless made us to explore a different route which will soon become our favorite long-drive spot…

We drove until Thiruvallur junction & we halted in a tea stall… My friend asked if I had any change & I got him all the change I use to drop in the car which came to 15 bucks… He got what he wanted & he returned 2 bucks back… When we were about the leave there was this guy selling Kulfi… I can never control myself my tongue when it comes to ice creams & I called the Kulfiwala without even realizing that we were short of money… When we asked for the minimum value kulfi he said it is 12 bucks & we were 10 bucks short of 10 bucks… I litrally searched my wallet and could not get more than 5 bucks & I was still short of 5 bucks… Then I inisited my friend to check if he had any change left in his wallet & he could get the balance 5 bucks…

The happiness I had that point was sky-high… It was like achieving or earning something big… At that point that Kulfi was like a priced possession… I started licking & I could cherish the taste entering my taste buds for each and every lick… Couldn’t remember when my taste buds had experienced such a great feel… At that point a bit of Kulfi missed my mouth and fell down & my expression was like missing Big fortune… Not sure how I reacted at that point but my friend noticed my reaction & he said “I spontaneously reacted like dropping something of great value.”

I literally came back to conscious only after finishing my Kulfi… While returning I was very much thrilled with that experience which was a common during schooling days where we buy an ice-cream to be shared by 3 – 4 friends & the the value of a couple of licks were countless… I had to personally thank my friend for the call he made which finally ended in me finding a new driving spot & an opportunity to cherish an ice-cream for itz full value…

At that point I didn’t feel like I was cashless but rather it was an experience which made me cherish & made my heart-full…

Everything revolves around company

These days I’ve been loosing interest in many hobbies & when I looked for reason it was the company you have…

Movies: I’ve been a great movie buff and I was in my peak between 2004 – 2010… These where the times I went for movies with Major, Balaji & Kavi… These are people with whom I do a lot of post movie discussion and I enjoyed them… But these days I don’t have such a perfect companion to enjoy watching movies…

Photography: This was very amateurish but never flourished as Balaji was the only companion with whom I was enjoying this art and after him I completely stopped taking snaps…

Long Drive: Again this was at itz peak with Major & Balaji and after them this has come to a halt…

Vagabond Travel: This is one thing I did as an individual… Though there was no physical companion when I was traveling… There was a companion in depression, boredom & loneliness which made me to enjoy my vagabond travel…

Thunder / Lightning Watch: This was very short lived by me & Balaji use to stop our car near Kovalam back water to enjoy seeing Thunder Light on the water… We spent many long hours for handful number of days…

Live Concerts: These were times with Aparnaa & after her marriage I’ve never been to a live concert until I went to AKON a month back…

At different stages there were different people with whom I enjoyed different things… Now am again in the hunt of a new company with whom I can start enjoying new things or continue things which I enjoyed earlier…

Long Drive @ wired time

I and my friend Balaji enjoy long drive and sipping coffee. Today Balaji called me at midnight and asked if we can go for a coffee and go for along drive. Though we are 29 years by age still we live under the control of our parents, TII (That Is India).

I accepted his request and I took my car and we drove to airport for a coffee and I remembered by cousin telling he has to pick up his brother from airport and I buzzed him and caught up with him. In food court we enjoyed good looking girls and some air hostess. Also there was one girl who showed more glamour and we thought it was worth the visit.

Then we came out and spent some time with my cousin in the arrival point and again it was pulling down each other and some more bottom fishing (in simple words some more babe watch).

Then we drove back home through the new Maduravoyal outer ring road. Balaji was sharing about George Clooney movie which portrayed how Americans do politics with other countries and that was interesting topic for rest of the travel. Then all of a sudden we thought we can do some exploration at that time by trying new service lane route and it clicked. It helped us to find a new route to by pass the toll.

Through our smart thinking and risk taking adventure attitude helped us to convert fairway to freeway. Then we returned home happily for saving Rs.30 that we spend for toll.
