Fear Supersedes Passion

In recent times I’m approached by lots of youngsters who have zeal for entrepreneurship… They have wonderful ideas and some even have good execution plan… But what is common with all the folks is the dreaded word “Fear of Failure”… They approach me asking me to help them in execution… In simple terms it is their idea where is I’ve to;

  • Invest in project…
  • Create, Build & manage a team…
  • Manage and align all the stakeholders…
  • Market it to end user…

What all I can get in return is their support from outside… Meaning they wont quit their job & they will keep giving their thoughts… They quit and join me when everything is set and company comes to a comfortable position…

In simple words they want some third person to take the risk and they will share the benefits once the project is a success… If it fails they don’t have anything to loose other than some time they spend on meetings & fringe jobs they do…

The reasons they have for not quitting their job immediately is;

  • They have commitments (at the age of 24 & they assume they will be out of commitment at 34)…
  • They have to gain some expertise & experience…
  • They don’t have sufficient capital…

For all those gentleman I’ve a simple answer… I’m not stupid… If your Fear Supersedes your Passion it your problem… I’ve no obligation to baby sit you for your success…

All I can tell is you are not an entrepreneur material because you don’t have traits such as;

  • Guts
  • Enjoying Failures
  • Fire in your A$$

Finally I’m sure you can’t become an entrepreneur until you change your attitude…

Life has changed with a BlackBerry

For long i wanted to change my mobile as my old low cost handset was having problem with its speaker. Also as a part of my new year resolution wanted to buy new handhelds and hack it. Other thing is i want to be a early bird for Web 3.0.

So as a apple freak i was almost about to go and buy an iPhone. But one of my friend confused me and didn’t allow me to buy an iPhone. He insisted me to go for a BlackBerry. He evangelized BlackBerry and still my passion for apple products made me blind and deaf.

Then for my birthday i got a combined gift from Balaji, Mom & Sister and it was nothing other than a BlackBerry curve. In two days i activated the email & IM options and within a day i fell for the product.

I’m using a BlackBerry for a week now and i can say there is a huge increase in my productivity. I don’t feel bored while waiting and I’m able to keep myself occupied.

For entrepreneurs i strongly recommend BlackBerry than any other business phones.

Marketing for Entrepreneurs workshop at IIMB

We often complain of weak marketing in our organizations. The problem in fact is not so much with the organization but the approach we adopt to marketing. We do not ask ourselves questions like “In what way is my product/service different from that of my competitor? How can I make it different? How can I make my communication unique so that I stand out? ” and so on. In short the problem is the lack of innovation in marketing.

Consider the following questions.

  • What is the most innovative application of blue tooth or laser technology?
  • What are the ten most innovative products/services (IT or otherwise) in today’s market and what can we learn from them?
  • Why is it that some start-ups become Google-like but others fall by the way side?
  • How is it that some companies are able to charge a premium for their products and services while others are not?

Given our schedules we hardly get time to reflect on such issues that impact our business. Keeping these typical concerns in mind a 2-day program exclusively devoted to marketing has been planned for entrepreneurs. A broad overview of the content is given below.

Program content

  • How to market innovatively? How to create radically different products or services? How to position them in the minds of customers distinctly?
  • Is there a systematic method for the application of innovation to marketing? What are the steps involved and how to learn the method?
  • How do I reach my customers? Is communicating with customers different in IT as compared to say, consumer products?
  • Can I be given a dry run or demonstration of how to make an innovative communication plan for reaching customers?

These are some of the questions to be addressed in the program. If the participants have other specific issues they can be discussed. Overall the idea of the program is to help entrepreneurs think innovatively to address their marketing problems.

YOUNG CREATIVE ENTREPRENEUR AWARDS

Young Creative Entrepreneur (YCE) Awards programme aims to develop a powerful professional network between creative entrepreneurs in India and the UK to inspire and facilitate the sharing of best practices in building skills and access to resources, professional development, markets, mentoring and resources thereby increasing opportunities for business between India and the UK.

A key objective is to sensitise the UK creative sector to the opportunities that come from working with creative entrepreneurs in emerging economies. A second objective is to better understand the dynamics of being an entrepreneur in the creative economy. Throughout the programme we seek opportunities to achieve both this sensitisation and understanding.

The International Young Creative Entrepreneur (IYCE) programme aims to celebrate the achievements and develop the potential of young creative entrepreneurs across the British Council’s international networks. India promotes enterprise awards in Music, Design, Fashion, Interactive, Screen, Publishing, Visual Arts, Communications and Performing Arts throughout the year.

Operating in parallel to the International programme, the UK Young Creative Entrepreneurs (UKYCE) awards was launched last year which seeks to create wider understanding within the UK of the potential of emerging economies as centres for trade, collaboration, cooperation and cultural exchange, and to provide leading young creative entrepreneurs with the opportunity to visit and interpret these opportunities for themselves.

The award programme, both international and UK, is unique in its focus on young creative entrepreneurs; recognising their centrality to the development of a competitive and sustainable creative economy. It is our intention to link the networks created through the international and UK awards, to amplify these opportunities. Quite simply, we believe that creative talent can be found anywhere and the next big idea can emerge from any country.
