From Restless Waiting to Divine Pause

One thing I’ve always hated is waiting. The second — dropping someone off and hanging around until they return.

As a teenager, my mom often insisted I drop my sister at her tuition classes. I’d grumble, resist, and still end up doing it. Sometimes even my cousin hopped on, and I became the unwilling chauffeur. I’d scoot back home, only to rush again to pick them up. When my grandmother scolded me for complaining, I’d shrug it off and continue hating the waiting.

Fast forward to today — I’m a father. And life, with its irony, has placed me in the same shoes. My daughter goes for her Hindi classes, and the new normal is this: drop her, wait for an hour and a half, pick her back.

I don’t enjoy it. I still hate waiting. But parenting isn’t about what I like — it’s about responsibility.

Yet, something surprising happened. Behind this uncomfortable routine, I discovered a new kind of experience. Since her classes are in downtown Madurai with no cafés or hangout spots nearby, I started spending that waiting time in a famous temple close by.

And there, waiting turned into something else.
The temple’s silence, the chants, the fragrance of incense, and the sight of strangers in prayer gave me peace I didn’t expect. The restless ticking of time became a pause — a divine pause.

Now, I don’t complain. I stand there, soaking in the positive energy, observing life in its simple rhythms, and walking away lighter than I came in.

Maybe waiting isn’t wasted time after all. Sometimes, it’s God’s way of slowing you down.

From Chocolate to Windmills: My Road Trip Plan Today

It’s 10 AM in Kochi, the bags are packed, and I’ve just checked out. Today’s plan feels like one of those road-trip montages from a movie: equal parts sweet, scenic, and slightly unpredictable.

The first pitstop on my route is Adimali’s Mc Bean Chocolate Factory. If Willy Wonka had set up shop in the Kerala hills, this would be it. For my kids, it’s less about “bean-to-bar” and more about how many flavors they can taste before we get back in the car. For me, it’s about breaking up the drive with something they’ll remember — because when kids talk about a family trip, they rarely mention churches or monuments; they remember ice cream, chocolates, and funny roadside moments.

From there, the road climbs into the misty highlands toward Ramakkalmedu. If you’ve never heard of it, imagine a windswept ridge lined with giant windmills and views that stretch into Tamil Nadu’s Cumbum Valley. It’s the kind of place where you stop, breathe, and remind yourself why road trips beat airports. My driver-self calls it “a quick view stop,” but I know my family will turn it into a full-blown photo session, with me trying to capture smiles while the wind tries to steal our hats.

And then, as every good journey demands, the day closes with the long ride back to Madurai. My caption for the drive? “Chocolate at the start, wind in the middle, temple city at the finish.” Simple, but that’s today’s storyline.

Traveling with family means weaving together very different chapters in one day. For some, it’ll be the chocolate factory; for others, the wind at Ramakkalmedu. For me, it’s the whole arc — the highway conversations, the unplanned tea stops, and the comfort of knowing that even when the miles are long, we’re together in the same story.

So here’s to today: a little sweet, a little scenic, and a whole lot of road.

That Day Yesterday

Driving in Chennai can be a daunting experience, especially with the ongoing metro construction that has shrunk main roads and led to digging on interior roads for drainage and metro water. But recently, I had to make a trip from Porur to Singaperumal Kovil with my friend and son, and to my surprise, it turned out to be a stress-free experience.

We started our journey at 9:30 AM, and despite the heavy traffic, I was able to drive comfortably while engaging in a conversation with my friend. My son, too, was occupied with snacking, watching videos, and talking to my friend. We picked up some materials in Vadapalani and continued our journey, a 50 KM drive to Singaperumal Kovil.

With my friend engaging my son and me, the journey felt effortless, and we completed the job without any stress. We returned home by 1 PM, and I decided to take my son back to Madurai, where he stays with his mother.

The drive back to Madurai, which started at 3 PM, was equally enjoyable, and my son’s occasional crankiness didn’t affect my driving. I took breaks to let him play in the play area of hotels, fed him, and continued driving without feeling any stress. We reached Madurai at 11:15 PM, and it was a great feeling to have had such a smooth and enjoyable drive.

Sometimes, things just fall into place, and yesterday was one of those days. Despite the challenging conditions on Chennai’s roads, the trip turned out to be a memorable and stress-free experience for me and my son

Week Markers around Tier 2 & 3 Cities!!!

Since, Yamuna joined me in Madurai we started buying Vegetables from weekly street market.

For a house of 3, it costs us less than ₹200 a week. We tried buying the same quantity of vegetables in a supermarket and it cost us ₹600.

Normally we shop at Bypass Road market and we have shops put in the entrance of supermarket. Once we got 3 lemons for ₹5 from a lady who was selling in the entrance of Nilgiris Supermarket. Out of curiosity I checked for the price of lemon at Nilgiris and the cost was ₹5 per lemon.

Usually these markets are set by nearby villagers who come to Madurai to sell their produce. Mostly they were organic, but over the time people have started buying from wholesale market and sell in these markets.

This is one sad aspect, but otherwise I prefer these markets because;

  • They are economical.
  • They provide livelihood for underprivileged.
  • Though it is less organic these days, they are fresh.
  • Also it gives me an opportunity to stay connected with all stature of the society.

iPhone making random calls in the background

Was encountering a wired problem with my iPhone for last two days. iPhone kept dialling random numbers in the background. It’s makes 400-500 Calls a day!!!

Today went to Apple store for help and they said they haven’t encountered such a problem. Also their diagnosis said everything was perfect.

I was suspecting my just updated iOS 11. But, Found that was also not the problem.

Finally, posted in FB get some solution from friends who would have experienced same problem and it worked in minutes.

See if anyone is sharing your iCloud account? This happened to wife’s phone, as her mom was using same iCloud account. Whenever her mom calls, they used to appear on my wife’s phone.

Only then I realised, giving my old iPhone 5C to my HR team, I totally forgot to reset the password.

So, this is a problem which happens when we share iCloud in multiple phones.

As always the power of social media helped.

My perception on SOHO has changed!!

Yesterday I went to NABARD office in Madurai and realised it was a SOHO at their Madurai officers house. Also it was NEWS that all NABARD offices in smaller cities are SOHO.

I had a long discussion with NABARD representative, but there was no disturbance from family members.

My personal experience from a SOHO has been horrible and so has been the case of most of my friends.

At a time when I was convinced that SOHO is a failure, I came across a government office which has successfully pioneered SOHO.

All went well SUNDAY

Yesterday was one rare day where every thing happened as per plan and without any deviation!!!

The day started at Anaimalai, Pollachi and after spending some time with my better half, started my days mission;

  • Reached Palani by 9.30 AM and had a meeting with Palani Reporters for our Citizen Journalist(IamCJ.in) initiative!!
  • Then started driving to Dindigul and it was founders meeting over the drive about the progress and planning for IamCJ.in with Dinesh.
  • On reaching Dindigul went to attend my friend Close Buddy Stalin wife’s Valaikappu(Bangle Function).
  • Then accepted Dinesh request to have lunch at his home and thanks to his mother for the delicious lunch.
  • Then came back to Madurai and took a 15 min power nap.
  • Then again went for a retrospection meeting with Swami, Saravanan & Nadesh.
  • Closed the day with dinner at newly opened A2B Restaurent at Solavandhan..

Over all it was a fulfilling day as no plan got deviated and every thing happened for satisfaction.
