What killed Ranjan Das and Lessons for Corporate India

A month ago, many of us heard about the sad demise of Ranjan Das from Bandra, Mumbai. Ranjan, just 42 years of age, was the CEO of SAP-Indian Subcontinent, the youngest CEO of an MNC in India. He was very active in sports, was a fitness freak and a marathon runner. It was common to see him run on Bandra’s Carter Road

Just after Diwali, on 21st Oct, he returned home from his gym after a workout, collapsed with a massive heart attack and died. He is survived by his wife and two very young kids.

It was certainly a wake-up call for corporate India. However, it was even more disastrous for runners amongst us. Since Ranjan was an avid marathoner (in Feb 09, he ran Chennai Marathon at the same time some of us were running Pondicherry Marathon 180 km away), the question came as to why an exceptionally active, athletic person succumb to heart attack at 42 years of age.

Was it the stress?

A couple of you called me asking about the reasons. While Ranjan had mentioned that he faced a lot of stress, that is a common element in most of our lives. We used to think that by being fit, one can conquer the bad effects of stress.

So I doubted if the cause was stress alone .

The Real Reason

However, everyone missed out a small line in the reports that Ranjan used to make do with 4-5 hours of sleep. This is an earlier interview of Ranjan on NDTV in the program ‘Boss’ Day Out’:

http://connect.in.com/ranjan-das/play-video-boss-day-out-ranjan-das-of-sap-india-229111-807ecfcf1ad966036c289b3ba6c376f2530d7484.html

Here he himself admits that he would love to get more sleep (and that he was not proud of his ability to manage without sleep, contrary to what others extolled).

The Evidence

Last week, I was interacting with a well-known cardiologist on a talk about ?Heart Disease caused by Lack of Sleep?. While I cannot share the video nor the slides because of confidentiality reasons, I have distilled the key points below in the hope it will save some of our lives.

Some Excerpts:

  • Short sleep duration (<5 or 5-6 hours) increased risk for high BP by 350% to 500% compared to those who slept longer than 6 hours per night. Paper published in 2009. As you know, high BP kills.
  • Young people (25-49 years of age) are twice as likely to get high BP if they sleep less. Paper published in 2006.
  • Individuals who slept less than 5 hours a night had a 3-fold increased risk of heart attacks. Paper published in 1999.
  • Complete and partial lack of sleep increased the blood concentrations of High sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-cRP), the strongest predictor of heart attacks. Even after getting adequate sleep later, the levels stayed high!!
  • Just one night of sleep loss increases very toxic substances in body such as Interleukin- 6 (IL-6), Tumour Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-alpha) and C-reactive protein (cRP). They increase risks of many medical conditions, including cancer, arthritis and heart disease. Paper published in 2004.
  • Sleeping for <=5 hours per night leads to 39% increase in heart disease. Sleeping for <=6 hours per night leads to 18% increase in heart disease. Paper published in 2006.

Ideal Sleep

For lack of space, I cannot explain here the ideal sleep architecture. But in brief, sleep is composed of two stages: REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and non-REM. The former helps in mental consolidation while the latter helps in physical repair and rebuilding. During the night, you alternate between REM and non-REM stages 4-5 times.

The earlier part of sleep is mostly non-REM. During that period, your pituitary gland releases growth hormones that repair your body. The latter part of sleep is more and more REM type.

For you to be mentally alert during the day, the latter part of sleep is more important. No wonder when you wake up with an alarm clock after 5-6 hours of sleep, you are mentally irritable throughout the day (lack of REM sleep). And if you have slept for less than 5 hours, your body is in a complete physical mess (lack of non-REM sleep), you are tired throughout the day, moving like a zombie and your immunity is way down (I?ve been there, done that L)

Finally, as long-distance runners, you need an hour of extra sleep to repair the running related damage.

If you want to know if you are getting adequate sleep, take Epworth Sleepiness Test.

Interpretation: Score of 0-9 is considered normal while 10 and above abnormal. Many a times, I have clocked 21 out the maximum possible 24, the only saving grace being the last situation, since I don?t like to drive (maybe, I should ask my driver to answer that line J)

In conclusion: Barring stress control, Ranjan Das did everything right: eating proper food, exercising (marathoning!), maintaining proper weight. But he missed getting proper and adequate sleep, minimum 7 hours. In my opinion, that killed him.

If you are not getting enough sleep (7 hours), you are playing with fire, even if you have low stress.

I always took pride in my ability to work 50 hours at a stretch whenever the situation warranted. But I was so spooked after seeing the scientific evidence last week that since Saturday night, I ensure I do not even set the alarm clock under 7 hours. Now, that is a nice excuse to get some more sleep.

Unfortunately, Ranjan Das is not alone when it comes to missing sleep. Many of us are doing exactly the same, perhaps out of ignorance. Please forward this mail to as many of your colleagues as possible, especially those who might be short-changing their sleep. If we can save even one young life because of this email, I would be the happiest person on earth.

Very nice & touching story

One day Maths teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name.

Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down.

It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers.

That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual.

On Monday she gave each student his or her list.. Before long, the entire class was smiling. ‘Really?’ she heard whispered. ‘I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!’ and, ‘I didn’t know others liked me so much,’ were most of the comments.

No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn’t matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another. That group of students moved on.

Several years later, one of the students was killed in’Kargil’ war and his teacher attended the funeral of that special student. She had never attended Funeral of a serviceman before. He looked so handsome, so mature.

The place was packed with his friends. One by one those who loved him took a last walk. The teacher was the last one to bless .

As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to her. ‘Were you Sanjay’s math teacher?’ he asked. She nodded: ‘yes.’ Then he said: ‘Sanjay talked about you a lot.’

After the funeral, most of Sanjay’s former classmates were there. Sanjay’s mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with his teacher.

‘We want to show you something,’ his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket ‘They found this on Sanjay when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it.’

Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. The teacher knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each of Sanjay’s classmates had said about him.

‘Thank you so much for doing that,’ Sanjay’s mother said. ‘As you can see, Sanjay treasured it.’

All of Sanjay’s former classmates started to gather around. Arjun smiled rather sheepishly and said, ‘I still have my list. It’s in the top drawer of my desk at home.’

Prithwiraj’s wife said, ‘ Prithwiraj asked me to put his in our wedding album.’

‘I have mine too,’ Rashmi said. ‘It’s in my diary’

Then Deepali, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. ‘I carry this with me at all times,’ Deepali said and without batting an eyelash, she continued: ‘I think we all saved our lists’

That’s when the teacher finally sat down and cried. She cried for Sanjay and for all his friends who would never see him again.

The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And we don’t know when that one day will be.

So please, tell the people you love and care for, that they are special and important. Tell them, before it is too late.

And One Way To Accomplish This Is: Forward this message on. If you do not send it, you will have, once again passed up the wonderful opportunity to do something nice and beautiful. But its upto U to fwd this one.

If you’ve received this, it is because someone cares for you and it means there is probably at least someone for whom you care.

If you’re ‘too busy’ to take those few minutes right now to forward this message on, would this be the VERY first time you didn’t do that little thing that would make a difference in your relationships?

The more people that you send this to, the better you’ll be at reaching out to those you care about.

Remember, you reap what you sow. What you put into the lives of others comes back into your own.

May Your Day Be Blessed As Special As You.

A Jam Packed Day

Yesterday has been a fulfilling day as it kept me fully engaged which is what a person like me expects. The day started drowsy as usual like every day. I got up by 11 AM and it was normal routine. By 11.45 AM i drove to my office and reached office by 12.15 noon.

Then I started the day with couple of tweets and posted a Blog. Then came my cousin who wants to be a part of my marketing initiative and I took him as a Business Development intern.

I did some mentoring which started with some enlightenment of his current small business and then I took him through his role as an intern. Hope he enjoys working under me.

Got a call from my friend who came to give his marriage invitation. Then spent an hour with him and took him to the house of another friend.

Then retuned to office to pickup another cousin who started an aquarium business and he visited my office to give his consultation on setting up an aquarium in my office.

Then by the end of the day me and Bala thought of going for a movie and we went to Satyam Cinemas and booked a ticket for Kurbaan. As it was only 8 o clock and the show was by 10.30 we thought we could spend the remaining time at Amethyst as Bala has never been there before.

At Amethyst it was as usual a nice atmosphere but the food was really bad. Then this time I was more irated by their behavior. in their menu they has specified their timings as 10 AM – 10 PM.

But instead they started closing the shop by 9.15 and the guy came near us and he switched off the fan without having the courtesy to ask for an excuse. They did all things to drive us out even before 9.30 PM and we came out with frustration.

But we were talking business, cracking jokes and I didn’t want to spoil my mood and I drove till island ground and returned and parked the car at Satyam Annex and we took a walk to theatre.

My expectations we set high on movie as Shiv Sena has said that they are going to send saris to Kareena Kapoor & while getting the tickets we were told it was an adults only movie and we cant take minors.

I thought there would be some adult scenes in the movie and nothing of that sort was shown. All hype created by promos, media and the person issuing tickets ended in disappointing me after the movie got over.

Over all it was a day where I was engaged every minute and I’m happy to close the day.

Good Night!!!

Pasha – The Disco Experience

This saturday (21/11/1009) i went to Pasha a Discotheque in Chennai. Itz been 2 years since i’ve been to a Discotheque. A lot has changed since then.

This time i went along with a couple of celebrities and a relative of a MP. So, we were allowed in as Stacks. Since i went with celebrities i got linked with Richard, Gayatri Raghuram & Narein.

This time it was a electrifying experience as danced with some celebrity girls and with some expats.

Time ran so fast and now-a-days timings has been cut short to 1AM, previously discos were open till 3 AM. I was not in a mood to end the day.

When i made up my mind to wrap the day. There came a surprise. Udayanidhi Stalin entered the floor by 1 AM and he stayed for 2 more hours and we were able to hang around till 3 AM.

Then we went to TAJ to have my favorite Gilli Briyani. Over all my Credit Card burned. But it was a day to cherish after a long long time.

Then reached home by 4 AM and did some office work and slept by 6 AM and slept the whole Sunday.

Carelessness Costs Dear

For last 6 – 7 years I’ve been using BSNL broadband and for last 2 years i switched to WiFi. As i spend most of my time in office my Internet usage at home is limited and same applies to my sister too.

So, frequently internet is used by my parents who use internet for accessing matrimony sites and for checking emails. Last month to our surprise we got a bill for Rs.3000/- which is more by Rs.2000. My mother was pestering me, my sister and father to check why there is a sudden raise in the bill.

We all took it lightly and to our surprise we got a bill for Rs.11000/- this month. I was torn left right and center by my mom and she is still unable to come to terms for paying such a steep bill amount.

I’m sure it must be used by some neighbours as Wi-Fi cannot reach beyond a point. It is sad to see how neighbours exploit others resources.

But i’ve to blame myself as being a techie i know the consequence of leaving access open & underestimating the knowledge levels of my neighbours.

Now i’m spending more time convincing my mom and I’ve taken up the responsibility of paying this months bill.

New GYM experience

Today is the first day I worked out with Sesodia Fitness Center, Vadapalani, Chennai. It is not a great GYM in terms of equipment or with ambiance. But the once reason I join here is because of the trainer. He has been my personal trainer when I was working out in Inshape 2 years back.

But it was not a start I expected. When I went there my trainer was busy and he asked me to run on the treadmill without giving any stretches. After that I was asked to work on EFX where I pulled my back.

Then I had to complain to my trainer about the back problem and he assigned one of his colleagues to help me with stretches. That guy did some stretches for namesake and then I was asked to do cycling.

After which my trainer joined me in giving core exercise. Over all I’m disappointed and as usual I paid for 6 months.

For now I’m forced to continue unless my trainer gives me the attention which he gave me 2 years back.

Itz a Rainy day

Today day started sluggishly as I woke up only by 10 o clock and I missed to goto GYM. After that I browsed for some time and I started to office by 12 in the noon. It was raining fully and I drove enjoying the rain.

On reaching office the office was closed and no one was seen in the office. Then I called Bala and his was talking to a client and didn’t pick my call. Then I thought I had to wait long or to drive back home.

Then got a call from Bala and he opened the door as he was sitting inside. Then it was business as usual. I finished the entire pending task and engaged with some business discussion with Bala.

Three of our staff was on leave and one went to client’s office. So Bala was fully free and had good opportunity to discuss important things without disturbance. Then we started from office by 6.30 PM and we went to coffee shop.

We decided to goto Coffee Central as itz been long we have been there and again we were talking personal and business. Then we decided to go for shopping & Bala has got a SMS from Special Editions saying there is an offer.

I wanted to buy 2 shirts to gift my friends for birthday and I got a Clock for free. Then I returned back home and it was a happy day as I finished many work and more importantly finance related things.

It is always motivating if we have good liquidity and plan things.

Few good words about leadership

I see a leader should be a good visionary, operations guy and he/she should be a great sales guy (sell his ideas and products) to both internal customers (employees) and external customers. He should assemble a good team that would bring ideas/innovations and other attributes to the table for a successful enterprise. I would look upto my CTO/CIO for taking lead on putting blue print for the enterprise for the next 5 years and bank upon them to advise me.I should be able to see value in their ideas and make decision/calculated risk for the future.

If you look in the history President Lincoln had a great team and some who were more capable than him and used their capabilities for a successful presidency.

President Obama took a leaf out of Lincoln and formed a great cabinet team and relies on them to advise him on the economic recovery etc..

Leader should know what the enterprise needs and know fully well his/her strengths and weaknesses. He/she should bring in people to shore up on his weak areas and if he/she finds strong candidates in his strong areas too he/she should not hesitate to add them to his team.

He should empower his people, stand behind them and hold them accountable.

Salem Professional Tax Experience

Yesterday was one of the electrifying days in my professional life. Everything got done in a jiffy. But things started with a shaky note. I woke up in at 5 AM in the morning only to find that my mobile charge is too low. Then I put my mobile in charge and went to refresh and take back and after coming back after 45 min I was shocked to see that charger was crap and the mobile was not charged.

Mobile was very inevitable because I needed bala’s help or clients Branch Manager’s help if needed. Then I charged the mobile with Kannan’s charger and my travel was delayed by 2 hours.

Then I boarded a bus to Salem by 8 AM and it travelled to places Dhindikal, Karur, Namakkal & Finally reached Salem by 2 PM in the afternoon. But travelling was not as boring because climate was cool and also it was raining often. Also I was able to watch 2 movies while I was travelling. Even more importantly the bus was not crowded that I was able to sit comfortable till the end of the journey.

Then on reaching Salem I enquired about Corporation office and on reaching there I came to know that Treasury works form 10 AM – 2 PM and I reached there by 2.45 PM. But I was asked to go to Hastampatti where there is the Corporation office for the zone where I wanted to Register & Remit Professional Tax.

I reached that office by 3 o clock and I was made to wait for the PTO. In that time I went and had lunch in a near by hotel and I was walking at near by places. I returned back to 3.45 PM as it was too hot. By the time I returned to Corporation say in 5 min, it got pitch dark and started raining for next 45 min.

I went to the computer room’s visitor area and took a small nap. Then I went to a Peon and told him I wanted his help as I’m from Chennai and I wanted to get that work done at any cost. Then the PTO came by 5 o clock only to go back again. But with the help of the Peon I got everything done in 30 min.

By 5.35 PM I got the receipt and assessment number. This made me feel good as it took 10 days to get this work done in Coimbatore & Bangalore.

Then I reached back to KPN office by 6.30 and with all their mess I got a ticket by 7 o clock. Then I brought a Money Today magazine and I went to near by mobile shop to charge my mobile and had Pizza as dinner and I boarded the bus by 10 o clock and reached home by 5.45 AM today.

Over all my confidence is at a new high after this experience. And at the end of the day what made me feel happy is I learned from my previous mistakes and caught hold of the right guy to get things done.
