Adidas & Puma Story

Rudolf and Adi Dassler learned at an early age the enormous impact that gold medals had on their shoe business.

When U.S. sprinter Jesse Owens got to Germany for Berlin’s 1936 Olympics, Adi Dassler drove from Bavaria on one of the world’s first motorways to the Olympic village. There he found Owens, unpacked a suitcase filled with spikes and persuaded him to try them. Owens won four gold medals in Dassler shoes.

“Owens’s success cemented the good reputation of Dassler shoes among the world’s most famous sportsmen,” Smit writes. “Letters from around the world landed on the brothers’ desks, and the trainers of other national teams were all interested in their shoes.”

Business boomed and the Dasslers were selling 200,000 pairs of shoes each year before World War Two.

The war exacerbated tensions between the two brothers and their wives. Although both Dasslers joined the Nazi party and signed their letters with a “Heil Hitler” salutation, Rudolf was a more devoted Nazi.

The origins of the split between Rudolf and Adi are hard to pinpoint but an Allied bomb attack on Herzogenaurach in 1943 illustrated the growing tension. Adi and his wife climbed into a bomb shelter that Rudolf and his family were already in.

“The dirty bastards are back again,” Adi said, apparently referring to the Allied war planes. Rudolf was convinced his brother meant him and his family. The damage was never repaired.

In 1948, the brothers split their business. Adolf called his firm ‘Adidas’; Rudolf called his ‘Ruda’ before changing to ‘Puma’.

Second Step to Crowd Funding

After a week of thinking, to and foe changes on strategies we finally decided on two things yesterday;

  • Deliverable to the investor…
  • Business Model for the investment pitch…

Thought that is just a start from today have to plan a lot of parallels and still we have a lot of things to do like;

  • Forming Intermediates (Brokers / Affiliates) to sell the project.
  • Meet more people like Investment Bankers, Serial Entrepreneurs to understand the legalities and challenges we might foresee and work on solutions.
  • Start working on Business Plan to show it to investors.

From now it is going to be interesting as it is going to be a test for our patience, leadership, team-work and skills.

Next time someone starts to spread gossip – think of this :)

In ancient Greece (469 – 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom.

One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance who ran up to him excitedly and said,
“Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?”

Wait a moment,” Socrates replied. “Before you tell me I’d like you to pass a little test.It’s called the Triple Filter Test.”

“Triple filter?”

“That’s right,” Socrates continued. “Before you talk to me about my student let’s take a moment to filter what you’re going to say.
The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?”

“No,” the man said, “actually I just heard about it and…”

“All right,” said Socrates. “So you don’t really know if it’s true or not.
Now let’s try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?”

“No, on the contrary…”

“So,” Socrates continued, “you want to tell me something bad about him, even though you’re not certain it’s true?”

The man shrugged, a little embarrassed.

Socrates continued. “You may still pass the test though,because there is a  third filter – the filter of Usefulness.
Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?”

“No, not really…”

“Well,” concluded Socrates, “if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful! Why tell it to me at all?”

The man was defeated and ashamed.

This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.

It also explains why he never found out that Plato (his student) was having an affair with his wife.

Moral: It’s good to gossip sometimes!!!  🙂

Orphan Review

Yesterday was a double bonanza day as we got tickets to watch a movie in newly opened Satyam Cinemas 8 screen Multiplex names Escape at Express Avenue. I’ve a seperate blog to write about the cinemas as a line is not sufficient for them.

When I got the ticket I was a bit disappointed because I’m not fond of Horror movies. But after watching the movie I got thrilled with the way movie runs. I wonder how hollywood directors are so much perfect when it comes to film making.

Movie starts with a Female lead who suffers from overcoming her abortion and alcoholism because of that. She decides to adopt an Orphan to fullfill the wish of her young deaf & dumb daughter.

The couple adopts a 9 year old girl as their daughter and from then their misery starts. The new adopted daughter separates the couples, tries to kill her new siblings, but stays close with her father.

In the end we come to know that the young girl is not a child but a 34 year women who suffers from a disorder. She thrives for lust and gets mentally upset in people seeing her as a child.

Over all it is a well narrated movie and a must see one.

Life with Crowd Funding

It is going to be 2 years and it has been a great two years run. When i sat to prepare on my future plans or next milestone for the company; I realized I’ve been standing on the same foot for almost 10 years. Even with my previous company I started feeling about stagnation and I came our by that time. Now again I’m feeling stagnation and not sure about the Value as a company we are going to office. After much brainstorming i couldn’t think much. I think it is time to jump out of the comfort zone and take some chances and work on some cutting edge projects and slowly step into R & D. After making up my mind to step into next challenge and make life more exciting like how it was during 2002 & 2008 I’ve decided to work on raising funds.

In fact finance is one department which I haven’t explored and i want to try my hands on that too. So, we have decided to work on two types of fund raising;

  • Raising capital through Private Equities…
  • Raising through Crowd Funding.

It has been hardly a week since we have started and after starting it is like opening the pandora box. Every day i’m struck with something and I’ve to work on new tasks to facilitate the progress of core idea. I sleep every day without contention. I feel the day was half complete as i’m not done with my pursuit. But this is what making my life meaningful. I use to have the same feeling when i started my first company & with Cogzidel Consultancy Services. Today I’m happy with the progress of CCS & all those thought of half baked days are making today a contented day.

I’ve lots of personal lessons where perseverance has paid yields… For now i’m working on strategies for crowd funding and withing a week we are planning start our first pilot campaign…

If any of you have any knowledge or information about Crowd funding kindly ping me… I might need your help on it…

Is beauty everything???

“An army officer comes shouting that they have killed the beast; for which the director tells The Beauty Killed the Beast” and there ends the movie KingKong. For those who have not seen the movie here is a small synopsis;

A movie crew goes to shoot a movie in a forest and the crew get lost and the heroine would be rescued by a Chimpanzee & eventually the beast falls in love with the beautiful heroine. Once the heroine comes back to the mainland the beast follows and eventually would be killed by the army fearing it would harm the people.

Likewise last Sunday went to have dinner with my friends & the entire restaurants eyeballs fell on this pretty women. She was accompanied by a guy who was simply UGLY. There was a spontaneous question from one of my friend;

Why aren’t we lucky like him Bro?

Then there was some reply from everyone of us for that question;

  • I said we didn’t take enough time to run behind girls as we were busy in our pursuit. We were unable to spare the quality time which they expect us to spend.
  • One said beautiful girls are arrogant & it was better we didn’t get such girls in our life.
  • One said if we need such a girl we must be rich to manage them.
  • One who put the question said we don’t have luck.

By this time the girl finished her dinner and left the joint and we all look at her with a deep breath & as usual we were back with our agenda.

What every the answer might be we are all attracted towards beauty.

My Perception of 3 Cities

Madas day is happening and I’m proud to be the son of a city which has a great History. But I’ve been thinking how did I feel when i went to 3 other cities and what was my first take about the city. Here goes my perception;

Bangalore: First i visited the city when i was 8 years old and that too for a day. I hardly remember much about that experience. But later I went to this city when i was 17 years old after completing my schooling. My father took me there for vacation. Right from the beginning i got excited;

  • I saw a very clean & planned city.
  • Saw pretty girls who were modernly dressed again unlike Chennai (then, now Chennai is much better than Bangalore :)).
  • Saw couples smooching on public places (Sadly this is controlled these days).
  • Lots of pubs unlike Chennai.
  • A enviable night life.
  • A pleasant climate.
  • Lot of hotels.

All the above were new for me then because Chennai was considered very conservative them. I even considered getting settled in Bangalore. But today Chennai has caught up with all the points i specified & Bangalore has fallen down. Also Bangalore has become a victim of mass urbanization and it has lost its charm. Anyways I consider Bangalore to be my second home town as I’ve a house there and Chennai – Bangalore being very proximate I don’t get the feel that it is a different city.

Madurai: There is nothing much to talk about this City. The day I entered the city it was dirty, unruly & zero entertainment. I felt very lonely for the first three months as I didn’t have any other place other than Cafe Coffee Day. I’ve never intended to stay there as that was not the place for me. But I owe a lot to this City as it helped me to come back from all the pains cause during 2008. Year 2010 has been more happening for this city and there are lots of joints and brands falling in this city & today it gives tough fight with Cities like Chennai or Bangalore. These days i enjoy visiting this city.

Coimbatore: My first visit to this city was 2 years back and I was really carried away. Like Bangalore i got a liking towards this city on first sight. Things excited me;

  • Posh houses & cosmopolitan lifestyle.
  • Pretty Girls but culture abiding.
  • Less traffic.
  • Good Climate.
  • Nice Business environment.

I want to get settled here if this place doesn’t become another Bangalore.

Insights of Stock Market

The man bought thousands at Rs10 and as supply started to diminish, the Villagers stopped their effort. He further announced That he would now buy at Rs20. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started Catching monkeys again.

Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer rate increased to Rs25 and the supply of monkeys became so little that it was an effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch it!

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at Rs50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on behalf of him.

In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers. Look at all these monkeys in the big cage that the man has Collected. I will sell them to you at Rs35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell it to him for Rs50.”

The villagers squeezed up with all their savings and bought all the monkeys.

Then they never saw the man nor his assistant, only monkeys everywhere!! !

Welcome to the “Stock” Market!!!!!

Grownups – Picnic

Today went to watch the Movie Grownups. I’m not a fan of Adam Sandler, in fact i really hate him. But the trailer of the movie really carried me. Ann there is the the Salma Hayak factor. So, i had no reason to stop going for this movie.

I really have no words to talk about the movie. It is hilarious comedy from the beginning to the end. No even a single frame went boring. Though many of the jokes were rude there is no complains from my end as I didn’t have a kid to take.

The movie starts with the news of a Basketball coach’s death and the only  championship team created by the coach reunites for the funeral.

After 32 years a lot would have changed. Friends decides to go for a vacation with their family. Though their spouse takes to arjust with the new environment they all finally join together to give a wonderful picnic experience.

It is a must watch movie not once but a couple of times.
